McRib alternative?

August 6, 2020 by 215staff

By Kirk Kern

Ok, I’ll admit it. I’m a fan of the McRib sandwich from McDonalds. When I hear it’s back on the menu, I make a point to go to McDonalds at least a few times until it’s gone again.

And those are basically the only times I go to McDonalds

But I saw a television commercial the other day where Subway advertised its new BBQ Rib sandwich. Since it’s not McDonalds McRib time, I figured I’d give it a shot.

But first, I called my friend Murray in California. You may know him from the University of Phoenix commercial where he talks about collapsing with a heart attack and being saved by a woman who got her schooling at University of Phoenix. His catchphrase is “Because that man … was me.”

If you’ve seen that commercial, it’s not hard to envision that Murray is a fan of food items like the McRib. But I digress.

Murray had already ordered one through the Subway phone app. He gave it the thumbs up despite the sandwich he ordered not having any barbecue sauce. Sounds like a big miss. He said after he got home and added the sauce, it was pretty good.

So I stopped off at Subway on my way home from running an errand. It was the shop on Blue Diamond Road in the Target shopping center. But they didn’t have the sandwich on the menu. What’s up Subway? Trying to make it hard to get like McDonalds?

Today, I looked it up online first and found that it was on the menu at the Southern Highlands location. I made the quick trip up there and placed my order. I made sure to watch as they put the sauce on. I even had them melt some cheese on it and then add extra sauce after it was toasted.

To finish it off, I added pickles, onions and banana peppers.

The final verdict: it was pretty good. Bread was obviously different from a McRib and maybe the cheese and banana peppers gave it a different taste than the McRib. But the meat was about the same. Overall, i give it the thumbs up.

My luck, Subway takes it off the menu soon!
