Despite its smaller size, Somerset Academy Sky Pointe has a dance program that has a big culture. That is a culture of winning!

On March 1, the team took state in Varsity 4A Lyrical and Pom, marking three consecutive years the varsity team has brought home a championship banner.
Under the direction of head coach Jake Phillips and their line captains, Dayana Barnett and Isabella Cox, Somerset’s varsity team is crushing it! With the end of their senior year approaching, Barnett and Cox, known by the team as Night Night and Belly, have nothing but praise for the team.
Barnett said, “I love this dance team so much. We all work together in the best ways and support one another through everything.
“They have made my senior year the best it could be. I would do anything to have one more year on this team.”
Cox said, “These girls have been the most supportive group of friends I’ve ever had, and being lifted up by people who care about you makes you want to win for them.”
Coach Phillips shared, “I’m super proud of this dance team. They work super hard and never complain. We went from being a performing arts program focusing mainly on promotional performances and events to trying to be a competitive team within the Vegas scene.
“It’s been an exciting journey and given we have a much smaller population than the public schools, I think our team has stepped up immensely to be in the conversation. I can’t wait to see what the future has for us.”
One thing is certain, Somerset Sky Pointe Dance is lucky to be led by such a great head coach. Not only is Phillips a teacher at the school, he is also a professional dancer and instructor at a local dance studio.
His passion for dance and his attention to detail are a key ingredient to the success of the team. If dance is your jam and you think school is cool…maybe Sky Pointe Dance is for you.
