On May 3, about 70 runners from across the Las Vegas Valley came out for the Superhero 5k run and 1-mile walk at Floyd Lamb Park and although not all of them donned capes and masks, they were all superheroes as funds raised from the event went toward scholarships for students from Arbor View and Shadow Ridge High Schools.

The event was sponsored by the Kiwanis Club of Centennial Hills, a service organization that advises the Key Clubs from the two schools along with volunteers with numerous other non-profit organizations around town. The club has sponsored numerous other runs since it was chartered in 2019, but this was the first year with the superhero theme.
“We thought about it and were trying to come up with a theme other than just a run,” said Donna Moretti, immediate past president of the Kiwanis of Centennial Hills. “The people who support this event are the super heroes of our community. We were thinking the super hero theme would attract more families to come out and have fun to go with the hard core runners.”
Some of the participants came out in full Wonder Woman and Avengers costumes, while others took advantage of purchasing masks and capes from the Kiwanians.
Moretti said the event raised about $3,000 that will go towards scholarships for this year’s senior class.
Besides this event, the Kiwanis Club of Centennial Hills also raises scholarship money with a bowl-a-thon and a Super Bowl squares pool.
There are nine Kiwanis Clubs in the Las Vegas Valley as part of an international organization that has been around since 1915. The Centennial Hills group has 20 members and meets the third Thursday of every month in person.
The main focus is on helping students. Besides working with the Key Clubs at Arbor View and Shadow Ridge, the Kiwanis Club of Centennial Hills also works with Project 150, an organization that provides free support and services for high school students, along with Sleep in Heavenly Peace, which provides beds for youths with uncomfortable sleeping arrangements. They also work with Junior Achievement, which helps teens learn about financial literacy.
Moretti said the club has 20 members currently and is actively seeking new members.
